A record of the first ever Langham Street Fayre.

Langham Street Fayre 1974

Bridget Newman, well-known landlady of the Langham Bluebell for many years, has provided access to the records kept by her mother-in-law, Myrtle Newman, the landlady of the Bluebell in 1974.

The first Street Fayre was held on Saturday 20th July in 1974. The poster indicates a familiar mix of stalls but other attractions such as an RAF Helicopter Height Judging. The Parish Rooms are referred to as the Village Hall - this would be frowned upon now!

The success of the Fayre is obvious from the published profits of £600 pounds. Here are a few photos of the day with the captions written by Myrtle.

"General view of a happy crowd in a lovely setting."    "Showing more of the street and crowd free to move around without traffic."

"Our local police who were wonderful, entering into the spirit of the day, still doing their duty."

The day after the Street Fayre featured a Ladies v Gents football match. This appears to have been a great fun event especially as the photo shows the ladies were in football kit and the gents were in drag! The referee, Clarence Jarvis, is at the extreme right of the shot and has chosen a rather natty ensemble.

And finally Myrtle posed the question "Have we got future Parish Room Committee members or Parish Councillors in this group?"
